Coach Gerardo Martino is leaving Inter Miami for “personal reasons,” according to a source. Inter Miami will hold a press conference on Friday with Gerardo and club co-owner Jorge Mas to provide details of the split.
Martino joined Inter Miami in June 2023 as part of a club transformation that saw the arrival of compatriot Lionel Messi. His presence has led Inter Miami to win the 2023 League Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield – the team with the best regular season record.
However, Beckham’s team stumbled in the first round of the MLS Cup play-offs against Atlanta United, the Argentine’s former club.
Previously, Argentine media, El Crack Deportivo, pointed out that Inter Miami’s head coach position could change after the failure in the MLS Cup. Former Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez was considered a candidate to replace Mr. Martino. However, the media also warned that replacing Martino, who is highly rated in MLS this season, could be a big mistake for Inter Miami.
During his coaching career, Mr. Martino made a big splash at Newell’s Old Boys in the Argentina league in 2012-2013. In 2013-2014, he had a season leading Barcelona before taking over as head coach of the Argentina national team for 2 years. In 2016, Martino joined Atlanta United and won the MLS championship in 2018. He then moved to lead the Mexico national team from 2019 to November 2022.
Mr. Martino’s most memorable mark as a coach was when he won the Copa America runner-up with Paraguay (2011) and the Argentina national team (2015, 2016).
