Immediately after the 0-1 loss to Argentina on the morning of November 20, Peru’s captain, Paolo Guerrero, did not hesitate to criticize referee Wilmar Roldan.
The opponent was not convinced after losing to Argentina. |
“Just a slight touch on Messi is enough to get a penalty, while we were fouled many times without getting any penalty. Argentina played very tough, but it seemed like the rules only applied to them,” Guerrero said angrily.
The veteran striker also criticised the media for turning a blind eye to the injustice. “You know it but you don’t say anything. Is it because of Messi? These are situations that have a big impact on the game,” Guerrero asked.
Guerrero also expressed regret about his team’s performance. He said Peru was not inferior to Argentina in terms of physical strength and could have played better. “We could have played more aggressively, attacked more and created more chances,” the Peru captain shared.
“Many times I tried to create space with diagonal runs, but my teammates couldn’t pass the ball to me. This made me quite disappointed,” Guerrero regretted.
The 0-1 loss to Argentina pushed Peru to the bottom of the South American World Cup qualifying standings. Guerrero and his teammates have only 7 points, 6 points behind the intercontinental play-off spot. Peru’s dream of returning to the World Cup is seriously threatened.
