Nick Kyrgios has sparked outrage with comments about his ex-girlfriend Anna Kalinskaya, who is now dating world number one Jannik Sinner.
On Saturday, Nick Kyrgios commented on a photo of himself and his ex-girlfriend Kalinskaya at an LA Lakers game in 2020, writing “second serve.” It’s unclear what Kyrgios meant by the comment, but many fans assumed it was a jab at Jannik Sinner, who is currently dating Kalinskaya.
In recent weeks, Kyrgios has been highly critical of Sinner, insisting that the Italian should be banned after two positive drug tests. Sinner tested positive for the banned anabolic steroid clostebol at Indian Wells on March 10 and tested positive just eight days later. The Italian was provisionally suspended but successfully appealed and is eligible to resume ATP play. Sinner explained that the banned substance entered his system when physiotherapist Umberto Ferrara used a spray containing clostebol to treat the tennis star’s finger injury. The 23-year-old’s team explained that Ferrara bought the spray in Italy, one of the few countries that allows people to buy products containing clostebol over-the-counter.
Kyrgios’ comments divided followers, with some agreeing with the Australian and others accusing him of being jealous as Sinner is currently dating ex-girlfriend Kalinskaya.
Whether or not it was directed at Jannik Sinner, Nick Kyrgios’s comments on social media have sparked outrage. Some have called for him to be fired from his ESPN commentary role.
“ESPN, Kyrgios is a misogynist. His tennis career is over and he has no respect for players or the game. Get rid of him,” one fan posted on X. “Disgusting that ESPN allowed Kyrgios to interview players after his horrible words against Jannik Sinner and sexist jokes against Anna Kalinskaya,” another commented. “Disgusting that ESPN is partnering with a misogynist like Kyrgios”…
Kyrgios, who is dating Costeen Hatzi, said he had no problem with Sinner personally, but admitted he would struggle to get over the saga if they ever faced each other on court.
“Nothing against Sinner personally. He’s one of the greatest players we have right now. I’m not denying that. Nothing against him personally,” Kyrgios said. “I’m definitely not going to be as warm and welcoming as I was before. I just want a level playing field for everyone. That’s what this fight is about. I got tested at my hotel two days ago. We’re testing regularly. This is a sport I’ve played my whole life.”
Anna Kalinskaya is currently ranked 23rd in the world. She reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open women’s singles earlier this year. The 1998-born tennis player dated Nick Kyrgios from 2019 to 2020. In May 2020, Kalinskaya confirmed that she and the Australian “bad boy” were no longer together.
Jannik Sinner is usually secretive about his personal life, but when asked about his love life after winning the first round of the Roland Garros men’s singles in May 2024, he confirmed that he was dating Anna Kalinskaya: “I don’t like to talk much about my personal life, but it’s true that Anna and I are dating.”
