Messi scored a hat-trick and had two assists in Argentina’s 6-0 win over Bolivia on October 16 in the South American qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup. It helped Messi equal his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo in scoring 10 hat-tricks for the national team.
Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi has been named the winner of the inaugural MARCA America award in 2024 by MARCA magazine, making him the first ever winner. Marca also picked the six best players of all time on the occasion.
Messi surpasses Brazilian legend Pele to win the title of best player in history
According to the @AlbicelesteTalk page on X, which has a screenshot from MARCA, Messi has been named the greatest player of all time, surpassing Ronaldo. Ronaldo came in second, ahead of Pele and Alfredo Di Stefano, who came in third and fourth respectively. Diego Maradona appeared in fifth place, with Johan Cruyff completing the legendary top six.
Commenting on Messi, Marca wrote: “In the Big 6, all have incredible achievements. Messi has won more than anyone, which is why he has the honor of being recognized as the No. 1 Player of the No. 1 Players.”
When receiving the award, Messi shared with fans about his expectations for the final years of his career. Messi said: “I still crave the title even though I’m a little older and my family is getting bigger.
I love playing football and everything it gives me. I went through a really bad time with Argentina before we got to where we are today. I think that period helped us a lot to become who we are today.
Messi also refused to talk about retirement, saying: “I don’t like to rush time or look ahead. I just try to enjoy every day. I hope I can continue playing at this level to feel good and happy. When I do what I like, I feel happy. I don’t aim to reach the World Cup finals, I just want to live every day happy and healthy.”
For nearly 100 years, MARCA has been Spain’s leading sports newspaper, covering national and international sports. Since 1997, they have hosted the MARCA Legends Awards, with notable previous winners including Michael Jordan, Pele, Diego Armando Maradona, Tom Brady, Cristiano Ronaldo, Fernando Alonso, Pau Gasol and Rafa Nadal.
The purpose of the awards is to recognize individuals who have contributed to the development of sports around the world. With its expansion into the US market in 2024, MARCA has now introduced an American award, covering all Major League Soccer, UFC, boxing, NFL, MLB and NBA tournaments.
