Jannik Sinner coach Darren Cahill has been candid about the rivalry with Carlos Alcaraz this season.
Coach Darren Cahill is one of the biggest reasons why Jannik Sinner has risen to world number one. He joined the 23-year-old’s coaching staff in July 2022, and Sinner’s achievements since then have been impressive.
Sinner really broke through this year, winning the Australian Open and US Open, and overtaking Novak Djokovic to reach world No. 1 in June this year.
His biggest rival right now is none other than Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard is also the only player to beat Sinner three times in a row this season at the Indian Wells Open, Roland Garros, and China Open.
Despite the fierce rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz, coach Cahill still has special respect for Alcaraz. He told Gazzetta dello Sport that he enjoyed watching the exciting matches between Sinner and the 21-year-old from the stands.
“I have a lot of respect for him. I would never say that Sinner is better than Alcaraz or vice versa. If they meet in the final in Turin, I will cheer for Jannik and enjoy the match.”
Darren Cahill may never say who he thinks is better, but at last month’s Six Kings Slam, one of the players was not shy about expressing his opinion. After being beaten heavily by Sinner in the opening round of the exhibition, Daniil Medvedev said he thought Alcaraz had the better game but had changed his mind after the match.
The debate over who is better will certainly continue as both players have many years to develop and could create one of the greatest rivalries in tennis history.
